Approximately 25 million American children live in single-parent homes, and though the concept of the "deadbeat dad" is widely understood, the truth is that many fathers want to be more involved with their children. The American Psychological Association has stated in a report that discriminating against fathers who want to be involved in their children's lives based on sex is both psychologically and scientifically baseless and goes against human rights. Additionally, research shows that keeping a father separate from his children harms them. The report, "The Importance of Fathers in the Healthy Development of Children," produced in part by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, reveals that children who have a present dad are more likely to achieve a higher level of well being in nearly every area. For instance, they are 39 percent more likely to achieve mostly A grades and 60 percent less likely to get expelled or suspended from school. Additionally, children do better when they spend equal amounts of time with each parent. Research by the Children's Bureau shows that children who spend about half of their time with each parent, instead of living with one parent and visiting the other, form stronger bonds with both parents as well as perform at a higher rate socially, academically, and psychologically.
